Did TTFA president talk to FIFA president on Caribbean Football Union’s threat to break away from CONCACAF

From Power 102fm

Trinidad and Tobago Football Association President David John-Williams officially met with the  President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino yesterday at the FIFA Headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, this as a consequence of John-Williams’s nomination by FIFA last week to the FIFA’s Players’ Status Committee for the period 2017-2021.

A TTFA communique on yesterday’s meeting said a wide range of topics were discussed relating to football development in Trinidad and Tobago including Leagues, Grassroots and Youth development, Women’s football and Facilities.

The communique said further information on these discussions and developments will be relayed in due course with John-Williams’s return to Trinidad later this week.

Several Caribbean nations meanwhile have supported a bid to break away from regional football representatives CONCACAF in favour of forming an independent confederation as disputes over funding grow.

According to multiple reports, the issue was raised at a recent meeting of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) executive and 26 of 31 nations were in support of the proposal that would see the region depart its 41 member parent association.

Trinidad and Tobago is a member of the Caribbean Union and the CONCACAF like other Caribbean footballing nations.

President of the CFU Gordon Derrick was the one to raise the motion which is firmly rooted in extreme displeasure with the attitude of the new Victor Montagliani led CONCACAF towards the Caribbean region.

Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) president Montagliani was elected as head of the body in May of last year.

Since then the CFU has reportedly seen the majority of funding and grants heavily cut and been allowed no major input in CONCACAF’s decision making process.

Many believe the measures in part serve as punishment of sorts for the region, who supplied the last two CONCACAF presidents Jack Warner and Jeffrey Webb.
