The five teens were not required to plead to the charge when it was read to them by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. One of them, the 15-year-old girl, was charged as a juvenile while the others were charged as adults. The matter was heard in-camera.

The youngsters are expected to make their next court appearance on June 14.

Scores of relatives and friends who had gathered outside the court were in tears as the five youngsters were taken to the courtroom to answer the charges.

On Monday, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Chambers had recommended that charges be laid against the teenagers.

The 75-year-old Professor was found dead in his home, gagged and tied to a chair. Quick action by investigators led to the arrest of the teenagers– four boys and two girls for the crime. When they were arrested by police ranks, a sum of cash, a laptop computer, an I-phone and a play station were in their possession.

The youngsters were reportedly arrested in the Campbellville and Sophia areas and had been positively identified by eyewitnesses who saw them on the day the crime was committed removing suitcases from the now dead man’s home and placing them into a car.
