The Caribbean Aquaculture Network has announced that Mia Avril is the new interim chair of Women in Caribbean Aquaculture (WiCA).

2024 marks year 2 since the formation of WiCA, which has been growing exponentially.

“We would like to formulate a specific mission for this group, one of which is to have regular and consistent meetups. As a result, we need to have a leadership team guiding this very important group. We hope to be a support and mentorship group for all women in aquaculture and to encourage and inspire students who would like to enter this field,” says founder of WiCA, Dr. Juli-Anne Russo.

“I want to welcome our interim Chair, Mia Avril, who volunteered to guide the creation of this role and assumed duties. Mia is one of the founders of WiCA and is currently on the Science Advisory Board,” Dr. Russo said.

MIA AVRIL graduated from the University of the South Pacific in Fiji with an MSc in Marine Science, with special focus in aquaponics in 2018. Since then, she has worked in various capacities in the aquaculture sector in the Caribbean region, including a consultancy with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Dominica. She teaches and conducts research in freshwater aquaculture at The Island School in the Bahamas. Originally from Saint Lucia, she considers herself a citizen of CARICOM.
