Celebrating Commonwealth Day in the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands observed Commonwealth Day (Monday, 13 March 2017) by raising the Commonwealth flag outside the Government Administration Building during a brief ceremony at 10 a.m.

The event was part of the international ‘Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth’ initiative. This year’s special theme for Commonwealth Day was ‘A Peace-building Commonwealth’.

Her Excellency, the Governor Helen Kilpatrick, the Premier, Hon. Alden McLaughlin, Deputy Governor, Hon. Franz Manderson, Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, and other government officials attended the ceremony.

The Honorary Representative of the Royal Commonwealth Society in the Cayman Islands, Mr. Lemuel Hurlston, CVO, MBE, JP, gave the opening remarks and read out a message from the Commonwealth Secretary-General.

A representative from Girlguiding Cayman Islands read the Commonwealth Affirmation and members of the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps raised the Commonwealth flag.

EDITOR: Prior to the above, on Sunday 12th , a Commonwealth Day Church Service was held at St George’s Anglican Church at 4PM that was attended by Her Excellency, the Governor Helen Kilpatrick, Mr. Lemuel Hurlston, CVO, MBE, JP, and other dignitaries.
