Cayman: Police investigate robbery on North Church Street

At about 7:45PM yesterday, 28 September, officers were dispatched to a report of an armed robbery which had taken place outside a restaurant on North Church Street. At the time the robbery occurred the victim had made arrangements to meet someone who claimed to be selling a vehicle via social media. The parties had agreed to meet to view the vehicle and exchange cash.

The victim was waiting at the rear of the location when he was approached by two masked men, one of whom was carrying a knife. The other man brandished a firearm, struck the victim with it, then demanded money. The men subsequently fled the location on foot with a quantity of cash.

The victim did not receive any serious injuries during the incident.

The suspect who was carrying the knife is described as being of dark complexion, about 5’8” in height and of medium build. He was wearing a white sweatshirt with hood. The other suspect, who brandished the firearm, is described as being of dark complexion, about 5’8” in height and of slender build. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

Police are taking this opportunity to remind the public to take extra precautions when conducting transactions with strangers. It is advisable to meet any purported sellers in well-lit, public places, preferably during the day, and to bring a friend or family member with you. Do not take large amounts of cash to first meetings, arrange electronic transfers or arrange to leave a small deposit before final exchange.

The matter is currently under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the George Town Police Station at 949-4222.
