Traffic Operations Yesterday, 16 March, to Educate about New Speed Limits

Wednesday morning, 16 March, traffic management officers were out in force to educate motorists of about new speed limits on West Bay Road, but also to remind drivers about those speed limits already in place for a while on Shamrock near Lantern Point.

Starting about 7AM on West Bay Road near Governor’s Square, officers stopped cars to remind motorists about the new speed limit change in force in that area, from 40mph to 25mph.  Officers did not issue any speeding tickets at this location, but only advised motorists of the speed limit change.

“This first exercise was a courtesy,” explained Police Sergeant Lenford Butler, “because we realize that a 15mph change in that area is significant, and drivers need to adjust to it.”

Police then moved on to Shamrock Road near Lantern Point, and continued enforcement.  Altogether yesterday morning 13 traffic tickets were issued for using or keeping on a road a vehicle required to be licensed, one citation was issued for no certificate of roadworthiness, and one arrest was made for using a coupon with intent to deceive.

Traffic operations to educate motorists of new speed limits will continue this week in different locations throughout Grand Cayman.  As of next week, speeding tickets will also begin to be issued in these locations.

The Traffic Management Unit would like to remind the public to pay attention to these new speed zones in order to avoid expensive fines.
