Rescue 1-19092015Rescue 2-19092015Air Operations Unit and Civilian Boat Rescue Five Men from Overturned Boat Saturday evening, 19 September

While on patrol around 8pm on Saturday evening, 19 September, the police helicopter crew heard a call for marine assistance near South Sound Channel, and immediately responded to the area, which was dark. Using the helicopter’s FLIR thermal Imager and Nightsun capabilities, the crew located an upturned vessel outside the reef, with four people on the upturned hull of the boat and a fifth person swimming toward shore in choppy waters. Two of the people in the hull were washed off into the sea and away from the hull. Seeing a small vessel about a quarter mile away, the helicopter crew flew to that vessel and, utilizing the Skyshout helicopter public address system, alerted the two men on board of the situation. The boat immediately responded, and helicopter crew then illuminated the upturned vessel, Rescue 3-19092015Rescue 4-19092015guiding the boat to it. The boat’s captain, Nelson Villalobos, and his crewmate then brought the four people on board and also rescued the fifth as the boat headed to shore, where they were met by uniform officers. None of the people from the upturned vessel, all males, were injured. The upturned vessel appears to have sunk shortly thereafter.

“This was a superb example of the police and community working together in an emergency situation to save lives,” said Steve Fitzgerald, Executive Officer of the Air Operations Unit. “I would like to thank Mr. Villalobos and his crewmate for their quick response and the use of their boat in this instance.”

Police marine vessels responded to the call but did not deploy, given the quick response of the nearby boat.
