Cayman Islands police helicopter to receive night vision equipment
The RCIPS helicopter is to be upgraded with state-of-the-art night vision equipment to enhance its ability to protect Cayman’s maritime borders and conduct search and rescue operations in hours of darkness.
The project is being jointly funded by the RCIPS and FCO through the UK’s Conflict Stability and Security Fund (CSSF). It will involve modifications to the aircraft and the provision of night vision goggles for the helicopter crew. A training programme and crew certification programme will also be carried out, although RCIPS pilots already have previous experience with such equipment, having used similar technology in UK military and police operations.
The project was announced during a joint exercise between the RCIPS Air Operations Unit and the flight crew of the RFA Mounts Bay on Friday morning, 7 July, at the beginning of a five-day visit to build operational cooperation. The Mounts Bay’s Wildcat helicopter is also equipped with night vision capability, for use in any night-time search-and-rescue or enforcement operations during its deployment to the Caribbean.
Commissioner of Police Derek Byrne said, “This is an important step in enhancing our ability to operate safely and effectively at night in challenging weather conditions. The upgrade provides us with the latest technology, which significantly boosts our ability to manage search-and-rescue and crime operations after dark.”
Matthew Forbes, Head of the Governor’s Office, commented, “The Cayman Islands and UK Governments are working closely together to improve border security and search-and-rescue capability. This project is an important first step in this process. Saving lives at sea and stemming the flow of firearms, drugs and illegal immigrants entering Cayman is a priority for government.”
