Cayman Islands Officials: Renovated Cayman Brac hotels will expand traveler options

Renovations and expansions to two Cayman Brac hotels will help the Cayman Islands territory enhance its appeal to leisure dive and luxury travelers, said Rosa Harris, the Cayman Islands’ director of tourism.

Cayman Brac’s Brac Reef Beach Resort is currently closed while it undergoes renovations that will add a new “free form” pool, a multi-level bar and upgraded accommodations, according to a statement on the resort’s website. The property will re-open in December as the Cayman Brac Beach Resort.

Meanwhile the 237-room Le Soleil D’Or has received a new beach club and beach studio accommodation, two farm-to-table restaurants, a full-service spa and a new fitness facility. The resort’s operators will also add of a small boutique hotel to the property’s upscale cottage accommodations in early 2016. The additional rooms would make the property Cayman Brac’s first 250-room resort, said Harris.

Cayman Brac is one of two smaller sister islands to the larger Grand Cayman and attracts a fraction of the land-based and cruise-ship tourists who visit the largest island each year. Nevertheless Cayman Brac’s intimate character and numerous dive sites, caves, rock-climbing and hiking trails attract luxury and adventure-oriented travelers.

Last year’s closure of Cayman Brac’s Alexander Hotel cost the destination 30 rooms, said Harris, although the destination did record some capacity growth through private homes, villas and guest houses.

She said in a Cayman Compass interview that the expansion of the dive-focused Brac Reef resort will expand options for leisure and dive-oriented travelers while the Soleil D’Or’s renovation “allows us to talk about luxury.”

Harris also confirmed that the Cayman Islands government is moving ahead with plans to build a new 25-meter swimming pool at the Brac sports center. Moses Kirkconnell, the Cayman Islands’ tourism minister, said $600,000 has been allocated in the budget for the project this year.
