Set to run from 29th to 31st October at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, this year’s Cayman Islands Healthcare Conference once again will welcome a wide range of world class healthcare professionals, all set to update and advise the audience on their specific area of expertise.

‘Embracing Emerging Trends’ is the topic for discussion at this year’s conference, and organisers have ensured that they have secured speakers from a wide background of fields all looking at emerging trends, to ensure the audience receives a broad level of understanding on a good range of issues relating to healthcare.

Dr. Adrian Legaspi, with Tenet Florida International, the conference’s committed annual sponsor, will be dissecting current trends in surgical oncology and management of gastrointestinal malignancies with minimally invasive robotic surgery. Dr. Legaspi is a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist and Medical Director of the Advanced Surgical Oncology Network for all 10 of Tenet’s Florida hospitals.

Dr. Robin Windhaber, from the Cayman Islands Health Authority will be looking at vascular pathology and diseases that are encountered here in Cayman and how modern treatments can be effectively used to improve the lives of these patients.

A leading world expert in palliative care, Dr. Jim Cleary will be delivering updated information on the subject for Healthcare Conference attendees. Dr. Cleary is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Medical Oncology Section; Director of Palliative Medicine at UW Hospital and Clinics; University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Looking at health issues from a new perspective, Dr. James Moore of Jacobs is a licensed architect, certified planner and LEED AP. Dr Moore is the current chair of Urban Land Institute’s Urban Revitalization Council. He participated actively in ULI’s Building Healthy Places Initiative and is current participating in the subsequent Healthy Corridors initiative. He will be discussing the ways in which the planning, design and development of communities directly and indirectly impacts the health of the people who live and work in them.

Voted one of the ‘Best Doctors in America’ for many years, Dr. Thomas J Smith, with Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, is also a world leader when it comes to palliative care. His presentation will feature the reasons to do palliative care (and caring).

Looking at the big picture with her chosen topic: ’10 Big Ideas for the Next 10 Years in Healthcare’, Dr. Ana Viamonte Ros, is the Director of Medical Staff Development for Baptist Health International. Dr. Viamonte was Florida’s first State Surgeon General and the first woman and Cuban-American to serve as head of the Florida Department of Health from 2007-2011.

Dr. Amanda Williams, Reader in Clinical Health Psychology, University College London will be speaking on her specialist field: ‘How we all use psychology when we treat patients’. She will describe how techniques from mainstream psychological treatment can engage patients more actively as partners in improving their health.

Dr. Robert Piotrowski and team from The Heart Health Centre, Saint Luke’s Mid-America Heart Institute will challenge the audience with their topic, entitled: ‘Your heart health is in JEOPARDY. What is your wager?’ With a unique and engaging presentation, Dr. Piotrowski, Dr. Ramza and Marcia L. McCoy (RN, MSN) will examine emerging trends in comprehensive heart failure care.

Taking a progressive look at healthcare, Dr. Jamil Bashir, from Regenexx Cayman, will talk on his topic: ‘The future is NOW: 21st century healing with your own stem cells’.

As the future of health care continues to transform, alternative treatment options in regenerative medicine are becoming more prevalent. Looking at a highly topical subject for Cayman, Dr. Marc Lockhart, Cayman Islands Mental Health Commission will discuss: ‘Bridging the Gap: The State of Mental Health Cayman Islands 2015’. Dr Lockhart has been a practicing psychiatrist in The Cayman Islands for more than fifteen years. He currently serves as Director of Inpatient Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at The Health Services Authority where he also manages clinical duties for forensic (Prisons) and Spanish language services.
