The Cayman Islands Department of Environment [DoE] is inviting all Caymanians at least 18 years of age, and who are qualified to participate in an upcoming cull of invasive Green Iguanas on Grand Cayman, to attend DoE headquarters at 580 North Sound Road, George Town to register for the cull.

The DoE will be accepting registrants between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. each day from Monday, 15 October through Friday, 19 October. Caymanians wishing to register to participate in the cull are asked to please arrive during the designated registration times as the department cannot register those who arrive too early or too late.

To register, an individual culler must be Caymanian and must be at least 18 years old. Businesses that possess a valid Trade & Business License may also register for the cull. All cullers must be willing to commit to bring in at least 400 iguanas during the first month of the effort and must seek to maintain a similar level of participation throughout the year. Proof of Caymanian status must be brought to the DoE registration stations, and a valid firearms license must be brought as well, if the culler is planning to use an air rifle.

Payment per Green Iguana taken will range from CI$4.50 to CI$5 with a financial incentive built in for those who achieve their quota target cull numbers.

It is important to note that no cullers will be paid for bringing in Green Iguanas prior to the start date of the cull – which has been set for 29 October. Further instructions regarding cull training and where to deliver the culled Green Iguanas will be given to cullers by the DoE.

Invasive Green Iguanas (Iguana iguana) have become pervasive on Grand Cayman in recent years, with DoE scientists now estimating there are between 1.1 million and 1.6 million of the creatures on Grand Cayman alone.
