Cayman Islands Government agencies given regulation training

DCIworkshops PRINTGovernment agencies are taking part in a five-day workshop to learn how to take a more strategic and cohesive approach to regulation.

Organised by the Department of Commerce and Investment (DCI), the workshops were led by Ian Rennie, formerly of the United Kingdom (U.K.) Civil Service, who consults for the International Centre for Parliamentary Studies.

The centre exists to promote effective policy making and good governance through better interaction between parliaments, governments and other stakeholders.

This week’s workshop is being attended by the DCI, the Health Insurance Commission, the National Pensions Office, H.M. Customs Department, the Anti-Money Laundering Unit, and the Petroleum Inspectorate.

“We aim to achieve a more strategic approach to regulation and have all the agencies and departments work together when it comes to the interpretation and implementation of regulation,” said Director of DCI Ryan Rajkumarsingh.

The certification course includes topics such as light touch, heavy touch and right touch regulation, public safety and regulation, international regulation and agreements, competition, and regulatory failure.

Mr. Rennie has worked extensively with the U.K. Government, and with politicians and officials in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, as well as the Caribbean.
