Cayman Islands: Big crowd for Brac DG’s 5K Challenge

4 Brackers out in force for DG Challenge PRINT 5 Health Services Authority group PRINTThe Cayman Brac community turned out in force on Sunday (17 April) to raise money for the 2016 Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge.

Walkers and runners converged on Cayman Brac Museum in the early morning for the route which took the 168 participants to the Catboat Plaza and back.

Deputy Governor Franz Manderson led the event, with Premier Hon. Alden McLaughlin and Sister Islands MLA, Deputy Premier Hon. Moses Kirkconnell also taking part, as well as walkers and runners who travelled from Grand Cayman.

Also participating were Chief Officer for District Administration, Tourism and Transport 1 Starting line PRINT 2 Brac walkers set off on 5K challenge PRINT 3 Walkers on their way PRINTStran Bodden; Chief Officer of Ministry of Health and Culture, and co-chair of the DG’s 5K Challenge Committee, Jennifer Ahearn; District Commissioner Ernie Scott; and Deputy District Commissioner Mark Tibbetts. Health Services Authority (HSA) Chief Officer Lizzette Yearwood participated and supported runners and walkers from Faith Hospital. Chairman of Cayman Heart Fund David Dinner also ran in the Brac Challenge.

The team with the most participants was Faith Hospital with 33 members, scooping the grand prize of a $150-dollar voucher for the recently refurbished Cayman Brac Reef Resort. The team from the District Commissioner’s Office, with 18 members, won the second prize $100-dollar voucher to spend at the resort.

The fast overall male runner on the day was Thomas Jackson and the fastest overall female runner was Lizzette Yearwood.

The 2016 DG’s 5K Challenge aims to raise $50,000 to help Cayman Heart Fund in its drive to buy a new ambulance for the people of the Cayman Islands.

“We had a fantastic day in the Brac and I thank everybody who came along to help make it such a great community event,” said Mr. Manderson. ”This tremendous turn-out has really given us a great start to help us meet our target. The challenge is now to see as many people as possible take part in the event in Grand Cayman next week.”

Registration for the Grand Cayman walk/run takes place in the Government Administration Building on Thursday, 21 April and Friday, 22 April from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The entry fee is $20 for ages 14 and older and $10 for ages 13 and younger. Visit www.odg.gov.ky/DG5K for further details.
