Cayman First appoints new Director to its Board, Mr. Abraham Thoppil 

Mr. Abraham Thoppil joins the Cayman First Board of Directors, serving as Chair of the Corporate Governance Committee and as a member of the Audit Committee.

George Town, Grand Cayman (Tuesday, 14 February 2023): Cayman First Insurance Company (“Cayman First”) today announced the appointment of Mr. Abraham Thoppil to the company’s Board of Directors, effective 17 January 2023.

Mr. Thoppil will serve as the Chair of the Corporate Governance Committee and as a member of the Audit Committee. As an Attorney, Certified Management Accountant and Chartered Engineer, he brings more than 30 years of legal, accounting and engineering experience to the Board.

As Law Reform Commissioner, former member of the Cayman Islands Financial Services Legislative Committee, and past President of the Caymanian Bar Association, Mr. Thoppil has over the years been called upon to assist in the drafting of various Cayman Islands laws, including legislation related to insurance, intellectual property, financial services, and local business licensing. He also serves as an Adjunct Lecturer at the Truman Bodden Law School and has been a guest lecturer at the University College of the Cayman Islands.

He joined Maples and Calder (Cayman) LLP in 1997, was elected Partner in 2013, and practised in the Funds & Investment Management group until his retirement from Maples in 2022.

Mr. Thoppil holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in electronics and telecommunication engineering, Bachelor of Science (Business) and Master of Science (Management) degrees, a Juris Doctor degree and a Post Graduate Certificate in Cayman Islands Law. Mr. Thoppil is admitted to legal practice in the state of Massachusetts, USA, England and Wales, the Cayman Islands and the BVI.  

Cayman First Managing Director, Roger Balkissoon, will work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure Cayman First continues to make a positive impact for all stakeholders.

Mr. Thoppil joins six other Cayman First Directors who all carry a wealth of knowledge and experience from across a range of disciplines and industries, including insurance, healthcare, and finance. Together, the Board oversees the governance of the company in relation to its legal and regulatory requirements so that Cayman First can continue to earn the trust of its customers and its communities.
