Cayman: Fire Service withdraws from GT Landfill

Grand Cayman, 24 December 2021 (GIS) – The Cayman Islands Fire Service yesterday (Thursday, 23 December 2021) withdrew its crew and equipment from the George Town Landfill yesterday, after an incident-free week spent monitoring the site.

“Officers will be able to get some much-needed rest. We will also be able to flush and clean the equipment. As the situation at the Landfill is very dynamic the equipment is being stored on a truck, in the event a rapid response is required,” commented Division Manager Randy Rankin.

In mid-December the Fire Service opted to remain at the landfill doing monitoring and preventive work after responding to a number of incidents in recent weeks. These included a fire caused by a car battery mixed in with other waste, and another instance in which the landfill was found to be emitting vapours.

DEH Director Richard Simms expressed his gratitude for the time and effort spent by the Fire Service to ensure that there were no flareups. “Our own crews who assist during these times have really come to appreciate their working relationship with the fire service and wish them a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year”, Mr Simms said.
