Grand Cayman, December 2, 2021 – The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) is reminding residents that dumping waste at sites other than the George Town or the Sister Islands landfills is against the law. Massive illegal dumping of bulk items and construction material have been found across the Ed Bush Sport Complex in West Bay and at the Newlands Bypass. 

“We have been forced to redirect resources to clear these sites on numerous occasions, despite several signs warning people about the penalty for illegal dumping. The recently concluded Bulk Waste Collection Schedule was a curbside exercise and at no point in time residents were advised of temporary debris sites. Let’s not make more excuses. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep the environment clean and stop littering,” said Mr. Richard Simms, DEH Director.

The penalty for illegal dumping and littering can result in 6 months imprisonment and a minimum fine of $500. This unlawful practice should be reported to the DEH or the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.

The George Town Landfill operates from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and it is closed on Sunday. However, the landfill drop-off facility at the gate will remain accessible to the public and small vehicles 24 hours per day.
