Cayman: CIFS bring landfill fire under control

CAYMAN ISLANDS (GIS) â€“ Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) crews alongside the Department of Environmental Health colleagues have worked tirelessly through the night to contain and control a fire that was detected at the George Town landfill site yesterday, Thursday, 25 March using safe systems of work and effective monitoring.

Three tactical sectors continued excavating and extinguishing deep seats of fire with a much-improved scene this morning.

A second excavator will be provided today with excavating and damping down operations continuing throughout today to minimize the chance of any re-ignition.

Chief Fire Officer, Paul Walker, QFSM said “I am immensely proud of the professionalism and dedication of my CIFS colleagues working hard to extinguish this large and challenging fire. Our work with partner agencies has been fantastic and together we have minimized the impact from the fire on residents and businesses in the landfill area. No injuries have been reported which is down to our focus on deploying crews using safe systems of work with effective incident command procedures.”
