On May 5, 2015 the Seventh-day Adventist owned Cayman Academy made a donation of CI$2,000 to the Cayman Islands Cancer Society. These funds were collected by students during the School’s Cancer Awareness and Health Week held February 19-23, 2015 and matched by the Cayman Islands Conference of Seventh-day Adventist.

Mrs. Jennifer Weber, Operations Manager of the Cancer Society expressed her utter delight at receiving this generous donation, saying, “When a school calls us with a donation it is usually $200 or $300 from a bake sale or a dress down day, so this donation from the Seventh-day Adventist school was quite significant.” She pointed out that this donation would be going directly towards the Society’s Financial Aid Program which assists some of the cancer patients with much needed monetary help.

“We have over 100 patients on Financial Aid and try to assist them in whatever way we can. For some it is in getting a plane ticket to go overseas for diagnosis or treatment, or for some it is help with rent. We treat each patient as an individual as each life is impacted in a different way.”

During the week of February 19 -23, 2015 Cayman Academy conducted its Cancer Awareness and Health Week under the theme; ‘ Food: A fact of life’. Students engaged in numerous activities that focused on how to prevent the risk of cancer through diet and physical activity. Classes delivered presentations and mounted displays in the auditorium to bring awareness about the different cancers that affect children and teens. Additionally, the activities focused on how a proper diet and exercise can reduce the risk of many cancers.

There were two guest presenters; Mrs. Sashoy Duncan who spoke at a general assembly about healthy eating habits and Mrs. Shannon Seymour of the Wellness Center who spoke to high school students about autism. Internally, Mrs. Alicia Castillo-Timothy, Ms. Nickayla Graham (student), Mr. Conroy Copeland and Ms. Hilreth Morgan presented on various topics such as “The Importance of Water”, “Chivalry”, and “Etiquette and Table Setting” respectively.

The student who collected the most funds during “Stride against Cancer 2015” was Zade Scott of year 8, a total of one hundred and sixty-five dollars ($165). The poetry competition winners were Neville Henry and Aviella Eugene of Year 9.

Cayman Academy is a private K-12 School located on Walkers Road in George Town and is owned and operated by the Cayman Islands Conference of Seventh-day Adventist.
