Cadet Corps team run takes a different course

Queen's Diamond Jubilee Parade (2012) 114The Cayman Islands Cadet Corps is looking for competitors for its 1st annual BDO 10k and 5k fun run set for Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 4 pm starting from the sports field at Aspiration Drive and Olympic Way.

Not your typical race, the 10k format allows each entrant to participate as an individual but also part of a team of four.  The race is scored similarly to a cross country competition, where each runner completes the course, and the individual scores are added together to compile an overall team score.

“BDO is delighted to provide support to the Cadet Corps”, said Director Russell Smith.  “With the assistance of organisers Race Caribbean, BDO Cayman is confident the inaugural race will be a tremendous success, and the Cadet Corps’ event will become a key fixture in the annual sporting calendar.”

Runners can compete for both individual and team prizes in the following categories:

Children’s Race: Medal for first 100 finishers

In addition to the 10k and 5k, there will also be a children’s race around the new tarmac track on the football field behind George Hicks School, immediately following the main race. Each child will receive an individual medal.

All proceeds from the race benefit the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps, a youth organization for male and female secondary school students between the ages of 12 and 17. The program is designed to teach the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, responsibility and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling self-esteem, teamwork and self-discipline.

“On behalf of the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps, we are thrilled at the opportunity to partner with BDO and create a unique race that brings together our community through sport,” said Lieutenant Colonel Bobeth O’Garro.

In addition to BDO Cayman, the event has gained the support of Tower Marketing and Caribbean Creations, and organisers are seeking additional funds from the local business community.  Please contact [email protected] for details on sponsorship opportunities.
