Bush, Anglin & McLaughlin to face-off in CBO 2013

CBOThree of Cayman’s leading politicians will face each other head-to-head in the final session of Cayman Business Outlook 2013 during a question and answer panel discussion that will drill down to find out just how they stand on some of the key issues of the day.

Former Premier Hon. W. McKeeva Bush will sit alongside current Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Hon. Rolston M. Anglin, and both will be joined by Leader of the Opposition Hon. Alden McLaughlin, for what promises to be a provocative and vigorous session to end the day’s discussions.

CBU B:R:MThe session will be moderated by Ben Meade, the News Director of Cayman 27.  The session is expected to last 90 minutes and questions are invited from the public to be sent to the moderator at [email protected].  Strict rules governing the debate have been issued to the participants so that the discussion can remain tightly focused on the issues facing the nation.  The participants will be provided with two initial questions ahead of time to prepare and respond to in four minutes each at the debate.  The questions will seek their vision for the Cayman Islands in the years ahead and their ideas about spending cuts or possible future revenue enhancement measures to close the budget deficit.  The remaining questions will be based on public input and will not be disclosed ahead of time to the participants.  Moderator Ben Meade promises to seek specific responses to the questions from each participant and to follow up if the answers are inadequate.

Now in its tenth year, Cayman Business Outlook, organised by Fidelity and scheduled to take place on Thursday 24th January at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, is the Island’s leading conference for the exchange of ideas that relate to business and economic issues on a global level, attracting a broad section of Cayman’s society eager to hear the latest on international developments that will impact their own lives and businesses.

Chairman of Fidelity Group, Anwer Sunderji is delighted that Cayman’s pre-eminent politicians have agreed to participate in the final local panel session of the day.

“We have an outstanding line up of international speakers from around the globe ready to enlighten the CBO audience with their particular brand of expertise and we are extremely pleased to be able to welcome three of Cayman’s top politicians to add to our list of distinguished speakers,” he states. “The final panel discussion always attracts standing room crowd only and as the Cayman Islands is now in an election year we anticipate that this session will again attract a record crowd interested to hear each politician’s stance on the relevant issues.”

The three local politicians join eminent speakers William Cohen, the 20th US Secretary of Defense and former US House of Representatives and Senate member, former editor-in-chief of the Financial Times Bill Emmott and Daniel Mitchell of the Cato Institute, who will be delivering a presentation on the U.S. political and economic environment and its implications to the world.

TakingITGlobal (a global online community for young people) founder Michael Furdyk will also be speaking. Mr Furdyk is a passionate speaker who focusses on the importance of engaging students and integrating technology and global perspectives into the classroom and he will give a presentation entitled: The Role of Technology in Education.

Michael Furdyk was one of the first to explore the transformative potential of applying technology in the classroom – and to the education system as a whole. He believes that to properly educate the Net Generation (students born after 1980), a major overhaul of schools is needed. Furdyk highlights practical examples that are already in use to show how education can move, assuredly, into the wired future.

“The world has changed and it’s about time education caught up,” he says.

Regrettably, due to circumstances outside CBO’s control, Salman Khan will not be speaking at the conference this year.
