Former Appleby partner and head of litigation, Nigel Clifford QC, and Nick Segal, a partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, have been appointed as part-time judges to the Financial Services Division of the Cayman Islands Grand Court. Their appointments begin on 1 January 2015.

On confirming the appointments, the Governor of the Cayman Islands said “The Financial Services Division is an integral part of the Grand Court and the judicial system as a whole. The appointment of Justice Clifford and Justice Segal to the Financial Services Division will continue to ensure the Cayman Islands has the ability to adjudicate the complex civil cases that arise out of the financial sector in the Cayman Islands”.

Nigel Clifford QC practised as an attorney-at-law in the Cayman Islands for over 25 years. He joined Appleby’s predecessor firm (Hunter & Hunter) in 1987 and became a partner in 1991, was senior litigation partner from 1991 to 2003 and Senior Counsel from 2003 to 2007. Prior to his arrival in the Cayman Islands, he practised as a barrister in London from 1975 to 1986. From 2000 to 2001, he was President of the Cayman Islands Law Society. He was also Chairman of the Cayman Islands Law Reform Commission from 2005 to 2006. In 2004 he was appointed Queen’s Counsel and became an accredited mediator in 2006.

Nick Segal is a partner in the global restructuring and insolvency team of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP. He has been in private practice for over 30 years and has practised in London and New York (and is qualified in both jurisdictions). He was educated at Oxford University (where he now lectures from time to time).
