48 Cuban migrants land in Cayman Islands

Photo - Cuban Migrants May 2016Forty-eight Cuban migrants recently entered local waters aboard a makeshift vessel.

They arrived in Cayman Brac on May 1st and were met by local authorities. The following morning they departed Cayman Brac having expressed the desire to continue their journey, but later that night the group of 37 males and 11 females returned to Cayman Brac. Five migrants disembarked the vessel. The other 43 migrants continued their journey.

On May 5th the five migrants were transported to Grand Cayman.

Earlier this morning, May 6th, the group of 43 migrants arrived in Grand Cayman due to technical difficulties encountered with their vessel. They were unable to continue their journey. Immigration officials have begun migrant reception and detention protocols.

The Department of Immigration repatriated three Cuban migrants to Havana, Cuba this week.

One hundred and sixteen Cuban migrants remain in Immigration custody on Island and are housed at the Immigration Detention Centre or an approved facility.
