The Editor Speaks: Airport horror stories

With the ever increasing security requirements at airports today it is a wonder anyone wants to get on a plane anymore.

You now have only a 50% chance of making a connecting flight if you first are travelling from a different country to another.

There is obviously a need for tighter security but there is also a greater need in making it quicker and safer. We are human beings and not animals and we are paying for the privilege.

The following is a report on TripAdvisor from a passenger who had a “horror” experience at two airports getting home. Unfortunately the first airport was here at Owen Roberts International Airport.

Even with the spelling mistake it is obvious where the country is.

“Grand Caymen Airport Horror
yesterday, 19:12 [Sun 13 Aug]

“What a nighmere it was getting home from Grand Caymen yesterday! Crowded was expected, so unorganized, my 38 year old son and I were the chosen to be pulled aside and apart from the rest of his family, everything in my carry on and his back pac were taken apart each idem scanned, they held my flight ticket, almost forgot to give it back, had to come find me. That was a good 45 minutes… then let us know , that once we got through the doors we would then have to go to a room so they could tear apart our larger luggage. The airport was so small inside it didn’t really fit the amount they packed in. The trip was very expensive, so I wont go back anytime soon! I will definitely do my home work on airports before I travel.

“Then onward to the Charlotte airport to customs before returning to Denver. Charlotte was another horror, packed in a long line with the escalator pushing people into a small room, could have been a disaster coming down the escalator and no room. people were hollering, ” keep moving ahead we need to get off the escalator!” Then a bottle neck door into a long room of lines back and forth to get through customs. Many people didn’t catch their connecting flights, luckily for us we had a 3 hour layover and that took about all our time. Now I have traveled a lot, but I have never seen so much unorganized airports in my life as these two today. I’m sure others have airport horror stories to tell, just cant believe the s*** show it was today. Had to share!”

The airlines had better start putting a lot of pressure on the airports to update their security systems. In this day and age hand searching luggage should not be necessary at all. If this continues fewer and fewer people will travel.

I am one. Being in my aging years I cannot mentally or physically put up with all that hassle. And when it comes to airports there are very few that have any provisions in place for the older persons.

We have a new older persons bill implemented but with no teeth and no easy way for older persons to get through our soon come new and enlarged and better Owen Roberts International Airport.

Horrors at airports, I am afraid, will continue until we, the public, stop travelling and then see how quickly action will happen.
