The Editor Speaks: Thank you Dwene we won’t be turned into zombies

Colin Wilsonweb2I suppose we should thank Dwene Ebanks and his misguided West Bay team who are opposed to the planned release of genetically modified mosquitoes in the district for stopping us from being turned into zombies.

However, at what expense? And at what great health risk?

Ebanks applied for a judicial review of the release of the thousands of Oxitec, genetically modified Aedes aegypti that are an environmentally friendly alternative to expensive and increasingly ineffective and poisonous insecticides that are proven to be dangerous to our health.

There is not one known case in the world of anyone suffering any death, disease, illness or discomfort from the release of these genetically modified mosquitoes.

However, this person, managed with the help of a local radio station and its male presenter to whip a large number of the public into a frenzy, with the most ridiculous and ill informed unproven “facts” to petition for the non release of these mosquitoes.

It does not matter to Ebanks that we now have three cases of Zika here and we are in the rainy season and mosquitoes are hatching by the thousands.

Along with his supporters, Ebanks has the audacity to say in his petition to the court that the release of these mosquitoes “is putting the lives of local people at risk”.

NO! It is proven without any doubt you and those connected with you are putting everyone on these islands at risk of catching Zika and I shudder to think at the worry pregnant women here are experiencing.

In 2010 these genetically modified mosquitoes were released in East End with no one suffering even an itch.

However, North Side is nearby and in the same year zombies were seen roaming that district. Obviously Ebanks has connected the two incidents together and assumed that one bite from these genetically modified mozzies will turn you into the walking undead.

I was one of these zombies and I can assure everyone it was a movie called “Zombie Driftwood” and had nothing to do with these mosquitoes.

Having now successfully killed off thousands of these Oxitec pests even if the project does get underway its potential benefit to all of us has been reduced.

It is incredible how a few people and one of our media outlets can cause all of us to be now at risk because of utter stupidity and motives that I personally link to political interference.

It is a disgrace and has cost all of us not only to the risk to our health but monetary as well.

I can assure everyone reading this if the genetically modified mosquitoes are released you will not become a zombie. If they are not your chances of catching Zika have been increased a hundredfold. You know who to blame and this time it is not government.
