Annual Cayman Islands Pirates Week Competition winners

[George Town, Grand Cayman, – The Pirates Week Festival has announced the winners of its annual competitions, see below:

 

Float Parade

The float parade is a community-based competition with an deemphasis on the battle between the District Heritage Committees to see which district float is deemed the best.

East End is this year’s winning district, not only taking home the trophy and bragging rights for an entire year, the committee also wins a cash prize of CI$1,000.00.

The 2018 float parade competitors were asked to design and create a float that depicted the theme “Celebrating the Seas”. The floats are judged on their reference to the theme, use of locally significant materials and overall construction and execution of the design.

George Town takes home $500.00 for second place and North Side in third place won $250.00.

 

District Heritage Day

Highlighting the history and culture of the Cayman Islands, the District Heritage Days are judged on the committee’s ability to showcase the traditions of that district.

Along with the overall presentation to the public including demonstrations of traditional craftworks and organisation of the day’s events.

This year’s winning District Heritage Day goes to Bodden Town with West Bay and North Side coming in a close second and third respectively.

 

District Heritage Ambassador Costume Competition

This wholesome family friendly event is a competition between the district heritage committees in which each district elects a representative to compete in the costume competition.

Members of the community worked together to create stunning costumes that referenced the 2018 theme “Celebrating the Seas”.

The winners are as follows:

1^st Place – North Side (Jessica Ebanks)
2^nd Place – George Town ( Roseanne Myles)
3^rd Place – East End (Dea Ramoon)
Miss Ingenuitive – East End (Dea Ramoon)

 

Song Competition

Bringing back the best of old times with the Pirates Week Song Competition saw audiences enthralled with the original music and talents of the participants.

Seasoned performers along with new comers and everything in between culminated in a show that was well received on the main stage on Saturday (10^th November) night.

Matt Brown came out as the triumphant winner snatching the first-place prize of $5,000.00 with the song “Mutany”.

Jah Mitch’s original song “Pirates Time” gave him the upper hand as audiences identified with his old-time calypso tune. He takes home $3,000.00 in cash prizes.

In third place, Erika Assai impressed the judges with her performance of the original song “All I Have” giving her the take home prize of $2,000.00.

 

Carboard Regatta
The Pirates Week Cardboard Regatta hosted two divisions this year; Seniors (17 and up) and Juniors (16 & under). There are seven prizes in all with the top three in each division and the prize for Best Sinker as all thanks to our sponsor Kirk Freeport.

First prize is $1,000.00, second prize is $500, and third prize is $250.

All vessels must have been made out of “corrugated cardboard” with no resin or wax-type coating found in packing cases used, nor any floatation aids such as wood, metal, styrofoam, or plastic.The winners in the Juniors category are as follows:

1^st Place – The Angry Pescatarians

Cayman International school – Grade 8 Physics Class
2nd Place – Sister Salmon
Cayman International school – Grade 10 Physics Class
3rd place – CIS Inspires
Cayman International school – Grade 9 Physics Class

The winners in the Seniors category are as follows:

1^st Place – Ted’s Tool Box
Department of Planning

2nd Place – Dolphin Totem
Dolphin Discovery and Dolphin Cove

3rd place – Pirates International Boat
Royal Cayman Islands Police Service

 

Best Sinking – The Pirates of the Royal Caribbean “The Curse of the Brac Pearl”

The Pirates Week Festival is the largest annual event in the Cayman Islands, drawing over 35,000 spectators each year. During this time, the islands are transformed into a mass of colour and revelry, with more than 30 different events being hosted over three weekends, across all three islands!
