Bahamas turns green with all-electric cars

NASSAU, Bahamas — The Bahamas has joined forces with the Cayman Islands in promoting a greener economy by offering all-electric vehicles (EV’s) for sale and lease.

EASY Eco-Car, a division of EASY Car Sales, one of the most successful and respected pre-owned car dealerships in The Bahamas, established in 2009, will be the first to offer 100% electric vehicles for sale and lease in the country. Vehicles will be distributed by Cayman Automotive Leasing, located in Grand Cayman.

John Felder, president and CEO of Cayman Automotive Leasing is considered a pioneer when it comes to the marketing and sales of electric vehicles in the Caribbean. Felder confirmed that, with the launch of the Bahamas electric car sales on Thursday, the Wheego LiFe all-electric vehicle will be the first EV available for sale and lease in The Bahamas.

The EV charging station infrastructure will be provided by Sun Country Highway Ltd, the fastest level 2 EV charging network and winner of The New Economy – 2013 Clean Tech Awards for “Best Automotive Solutions” in the world.

“Sun Country Highway will soon have 90% of all Canadian roads, highways and freeways greened by strategically placing well over 1,000 EV charging stations across the nation, without requiring government funding,” said Kent Rathwell, president and founder of Sun Country Highway Ltd.

Canadian roads are now the most economically, socially and environmentally sustainable passenger vehicle transportation system in the world, and commuters are now traveling across one of the largest and coldest countries in green electric vehicles.

“We are elated to have The Bahamas plug into our economically, socially and environmentally sustainable transportation system,” said Rathwell. “Island nations are at risk due to climate change and, as global citizens, we are in control of the planet’s destiny and should not continue blaming governments and large corporations.”

Certainly, leading by example will change the world, and it is as simple as everyone doing their own part.

As electric vehicles make their entrance into the Caribbean market, consumers can now make healthier lifestyle choices by reducing their carbon footprint, while contributing to the overall health of the region and the planet as well.

The Bahamas will become one of seven Caribbean countries that will see 100% electric vehicles and Sun Country’s charging infrastructure stations implemented in 2014.

Felder recently commented, “The Caribbean is the perfect place for electric vehicles, shorter traveling distances, lower speed limits, abundance of sunlight for solar panel charge stations and a community that wants to protect their natural beauty and environment for all future generations.”

The Wheego Life is not a hybrid, therefore has no reliance on gasoline, and it has a range of about 100 miles on a single charge. The batteries can be recharged using either a standard 120V or a Level 2 (240V) charge station. The vehicle produces zero emissions, making it the cleanest and greenest vehicle available in The Bahamas. All that is required is an overnight charge to your Wheego LiFe, and the next morning you are ready to drive for another 100 miles.
