Underlining Gender Equality

Spotlight GE 1The week of Monday, 18 February, GIS Spotlight promotes gender equality, and the need, once again, to enhance marine parks for future generations.

With the advent of the Gender Equality Law and the Bill of Rights, gender equality is now doubly enshrined in local legislation. However, gender based discrimination is still evident in the workplace, whether in the public or private sectors. Gender also continues to play a huge role in the education of our children, in a manner that affects many variables in every child’s life.

Spotlight GE 2Tune in to GIS Spotlight to see how the Islands’ largest employer – core government – promotes gender equality. Learn what laws are on the statutes to protect your interests when it comes to gender discrimination. Get a glimpse of how gender can affect a child in the education system.

Next we dive into efforts led by the Department of Environment (DOE) to better preserve the Cayman Islands’ marine heritage. Hear from local fishermen, conservationists and Department of Environment (DoE) officials about the dangers that they see to our reefs, which prompt the need to further protect and nurture these submarine treasures.

Learn how man-made and natural trauma impacts fragile marine life and discover what effect over-fishing, climate change and ocean acidification will have on our waters if we don’t act now to prevent this. Also see how 25 years of marine parks have helped the Cayman Islands to retain its underwater allure.

Produced by GIS Marketing and Communications, GIS Spotlight outlines government services and solutions regarding issues that concern and affect you. The weekly programme airs Mondays on CIGTV on Cable Channel 20 after 7 pm; and on Cayman27 at 8.30 pm on Tuesdays, and 6 pm on Saturdays.

All stories seen in the week’s GIS Spotlight can also be found on the GIS Marketing and Communications website: www.gis.ky.
