What you should consider when buying the right mask

In the recent past, face masks have become our mandatory companions to control the spread of COVID-19 after the virus emerged in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. Face masks were used before to contain the outspread of respiratory infections, such as influenza and tuberculosis, and recently the novel coronavirus. So, one might be asking; what do I need to consider so that I select the proper face mask? This article provides you with a guide on the factors you need to look into to help you choose a face mask that serves the purpose.

  1. The Material used to Make the Mask

Is the material used efficiently resistant to bacteria or viruses? A good fabric can filter respiratory droplets of any size. Surgical masks and N95 Masks are the most effective in preventing the filtration of such airborne droplets. However, due to the masks’ shortage, you could use reusable masks woven using efficient material. Cotton and polyester are such materials. Covers Made from these materials, however, should be made in multiple layers.

  1. The Comfortability of the Mask

Choose a mask that you can comfortably put on for a long time. Despite a mask meeting its protection purpose, consider selecting the mask that is porous enough to allow you to breathe normally. Children, in particular, can have problems wearing the masks for long if the masks make them unable to breathe well. Additionally, for enhanced comfortability, avoid masks with tightened elastic loops, those made of itchy fabric, masks that cause smelliness, and those masks that slip constantly.

  1. The Number of Layers

A mask produced with multiple layers of fabric is the best mask to prevent the spread of any respiratory infection successfully. To assess the diversity of the layers, check specifically at the ply numbers. The available ply types include; 2-ply, 3-ply, 4-ply, and 5-ply. A 5-ply mask is the most effective because it filters out 95 percent of the airborne particles. The 4-ply and 3-ply masks are also efficient. The fundamental point to understand here is that the more fabric a mask has, the greater is its ability to blockage. Due to high spread of corona virus some people follow double masking which turns out to be a effective self protection.

  1. Does the Mask fit accurately?

A good mask is that which fits snugly and covers your entire nose and mouth. Avoid a too tight mask as it will affect your normal breathing and, worse off, be a cause for suffocation. Additionally, avoid a big and loose mask because it allows respiratory droplets to escape from within or outside your mouth. Although the mask is more comfortable to breathe in, a loose mask is not effective in preventing the spread of any infection.
