Cayman Islands to celebrate families

Family_DayInternational Day of Families is Sunday 15 May 2016, and the Cayman Islands will join the rest of the world in celebration.

This year’s theme is Families, Healthy Lives and Sustainable Futures.

Commenting on the theme Miriam Foster of the Family Resource Centre (FRC) says, “FRC, as part of the Department of Counselling Services, regularly comes in contact with persons struggling now with the effects of not having a supportive family, which is something we need to thrive”

“This is not a personal matter, but rather is embedded at the core of society. When families work together and function as a unit, negative behaviours decrease, health is better overall and individuals have a safe place to call home” Ms Foster explains.

Accordingly, from 15 May the FRC invites families to engage in a week of team building activities through its Fun Family Team Building Challenge.

Every day FRC will release a family challenge theme and outline different ways the challenge can be completed. Send a photo or a video of your family completing the challenge by 9pm daily and your family will be eligible for the daily drawing to win a family date night. Daily prizes will include: bowling, movie passes, mini golf, dinner gift certificates and the grand prize of a staycation for the whole family.

“Never underestimate the power of fun and connection. Taking time to have fun and slowing down to connect can give your family a surprising boost” says Mrs. Foster.

Each year International Day of Families seeks to showcase the important role the family unit in ensuring the health and well-being of children. The aim is to create dialogue that could lead to changes in policies and the community, which prioritise family life and support the development of healthy families.
