WORLD RUN DAY 5K

The 2011 local edition of a run to celebrate World Run Day will be conducted on Saturday, 22 October, with a start time of 7:30 a.m.

Assembly point is the Harbour Place complex south of Boilers Road and the Crafts Market. Registration fee is CI $15,and event shirts, overall and random prizes are included, as well as awards for national costume. Refreshments will be served.

New Yorker Bill McDermott initiated world Run Day in 1999.

Bill is an avid running fan and he wondered what might be the ultimate running event. Thus was born World Run Day.

The event traditionally takes place on the Sunday closest to 8 November to honour the memory of Bill’s brother, who died in an auto accident on that date in 1983.The Cayman Islands has participated in the celebration every year, but the local observance depends on whether other events are scheduled.

Action takes place worldwide and thousands of runners have joined in over the years-singly, in informal groups and in organised competitions as well.

With encouragement toward display of national symbols and costumes, representation of the varied origins of members of the community here also offers an opportunity to recognise United Nations Day (24 October).

Entry forms may be downloaded from www.caymanactive.com and race day registration takes place from 6:30 a.m. to 7:15 a.m.

Further information is available from the race organisers, the Phoenix Athletic Club, at 945-3970.
