Weekly News from National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NG)

unnamed-11The NC had special visitors here at the Gallery on Monday, 17th February for Happy Seniors Morning. Over 30 seniors visited from the Elmslie Memorial United Church and Church of God. The Happy Seniors enjoyed taking part in creative art activities, listing to a lecture about the history of art in the Cayman Islands, and participating in tours of the current exhibition titled Our Story of Art. Seniors also found time to relax in the National Gallery gardens while snacking on special treats.

unnamed-10In other news the turn out to Cine Club at the Gallery has been outstanding. This week’s upcoming film is Habla con Ella (Talk to Her), which will be showing Monday, 24 February. This film is a Spanish drama that won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign-Language Film.

The Gallery appreciates the public’s continuous support and are still encouraging families and individuals from the community to keep supporting the NG.

FILM EXHIBITION: Modern European Cinema – popular and award winning films from across Europe. 13 January – 24 March.

Showtimes every other Monday.

Did you know? Talk to Her revolves around two men who become friends while taking care of the comatose women they love. Combining elements of modern dance and silent filmmaking with a narrative that embraces coincidence and fate, in the film, Almodóvar plots the lives of his characters, thrown together by unimaginably bad luck, towards an unexpected conclusion.

Many thanks to Christel and Judy for kindly donating the workshop fees to NGCI.

Join us for this rare opportunity to work with an artist and learn her secrets! At this workshop, Christel will teach you the techniques she uses to create multi-layered, textured paintings using mixed media, acrylic and oil.

The workshop will explore how the spectrum of light and contrasting hues are the most important factors to consider when attempting to capture the glorious colour and texture of the Caribbean waters and the Cayman beaches. Students will create a seascape by exploring reflection and the effect of light flickering on the water, creating life on a blank canvas.

Call for Photographers

The National Gallery “Ivan Remembered” Exhibition

Ivan Remembered is an exhibition that will commemorate the ten-year anniversary of Hurricane Ivan. Featured photographers include Courtney Platt and David Wolfe, whose stunning photos of the aftermath of the storm formed part of NGCI’s 2004 Emergence exhibition, along with other members of the Cayman Islands community.

The exhibition will consist of 30 large format photographs, interspersed with quotes from the public remembering their experiences – both challenging and uplifting – during and after Hurricane Ivan. A short film, which was created by NGCI and Monster Media as part of Emergence and featuring well-known local artists, will also be on display.

NGCI is extending an invitation to exhibit to local photographers. We are seeking works with creative vision, in accordance with our position as an art gallery, although exceptional representational photography which provides a documentary visual account will also be considered. Please note that the successful images must be minimum 300 dpi and 2MB, or more, in size.

Photographers interested in participating in the exhibition are invited to submit works for consideration by the NGCI Exhibitions Committee.

DEADLINE for submissions is 25 April 2014.

The exhibition will run from 4 September – 27 September 2014 in the Lower Exhibition Hall (Main Gallery).

ARTicles in the News

Ever wear your parents’ or grandparents’ old clothes or have them wear yours? A photographer asked individuals to swap garb with their relatives who are from a different generation.

The artist, who goes by the name Qozop, makes a humorous yet curiously engaging examination of how Asian cultural traditions can be traced through clothing choices across generational divides. Click here to read more.
