Schhh! Don’t tell anyone but someone stole our police van

Police delay 4 months in reporting theft of own van

After prompting from another media house the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) have admitted they were the victims of thieves themselves.

A police spokesperson said on Friday (30), “We can confirm that an unmarked police utility van was stolen from a public car park in the George Town area in early July. At the time of the theft the vehicle did not contain any police equipment. Despite extensive police enquiries the vehicle has not yet been recovered or the person responsible traced.”

The RCIPS have denied the van contained expensive equipment although the media house’s sources tell them it did and the keys of the vehicle were left in the van.

In addition, the RCIPS also reported the theft of a police motorcycle from back in September. The motorcycle was also taken from the George Town area and recovered some weeks later in West Bay.

A suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the motorbike theft, police said.

No explanation has been given by the RCIPS as to why they did not inform the public immediately. If they had there would have been a better chance of locating it.

This is a very poor example to the public of coming clean. In fact it is the opposite. It looks to all of us as a cover up. The embarrassment of admitting it and asking for the public’s help wouldn’t have been a quarter as bad as it is now.

It is most shocking.
