Rumours buzzing around North Sound golf course

Members of the North Sound Club that use the 18 hole championship golf course situated on SafeHaven Drive just east of the bypass behind the Ritz Carlton received some unwelcome news recently. General Manager of the Club, Davy Ebanks sent a letter to members on November 7th informing them their memberships will not be renewed.

The letter said, “Please be informed that due to a number of factors, we are not in a position to extend an offer to renew your membership beyond that date. We regret the circumstances that have made this decision necessary and want you to be aware that we have and will continue to work to find ways to keep the course open and golf available past the 16th.” Mr. Ebanks thanked members for their support over the years.

North Sound Club is part of the group of companies headed by Michael Ryan, of the Dragon Bay development and the man responsible for the Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman.

A spokesperson for The Residencies At The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman stated, “The North Sound Club is not closing at this time, however there is some internal restructuring taking place and some NSC employees are being transferred to other positions within the group of companies. Company management seeks to keep members and stakeholders informed of all developments that may impact the service they are accustomed to.”

However, Mr. Ryan has been reported as saying he is “not going to keep writing a cheque every month” to keep the course open.

The “Buzz” is the golf course is not financially viable in its current state. The shortfall against expenses has been recorded as being between $60,000 and $100,000
every month.

The greatest expense is obviously water and although we are in the rainy season now this will soon be coming to an end.

Premier, McKeeva Bush said, “Government will look at what needs to be done to help keep it [the North Sound Club] open.” He understood the importance of the North Sound Club.
