Lord Blencathra Investigation Dismissed

Following our story in iNews Cayman on October 2nd under the title “Foreign Office approved peer’s role as tax haven lobbyist” from The Bureau of Investigative Journalism”, the Cayman Islands Government has issued the following release:

 Sunday, 7 October 2012

Stating that the Rt. Hon. Lord Blencathra has not breached the UK Parliamentary Code of Conduct, the UK Commissioner for Standards subsequently has dismissed a complaint lodged against him.

In a letter dated 27 September, Commissioner Paul Kernaghan thanked Lord Blencathra for his assistance with the case, and said he would submit his report dismissing the complaint to the Sub-Committee on Lords’ Conduct.

The matter of conduct arose when UK publication The Independent printed a story on 17 April, questioning Lord Blencathra’s sitting as a peer in the House of Lords, while also holding the post of director of the Cayman Islands Government’s London Office.

On 18 April, The Independent printed a story saying there were demands for Lord Blencathra to be investigated. A complaint was issued on 17 July by UK MP Paul Flynn.

The Commissioner dismissed the complaint after finding that Lord Blencathra was ‘not providing parliamentary advice or services to the Cayman Islands Government Office in the United Kingdom’.
