Nature enthusiasts always enjoy an afternoon spent at Pedro St. James, a National Historic Site right here in the Cayman Islands. The destination is described as a “living heritage museum that will transport you back to the origins of this country’s government, back to the development of its social structure, and back to the challenges of settling an untamed land.” Just a 20-minute drive from George Town, it makes for the perfect day trip for anybody looking to soak in some history along with the Grand Cayman sun.

The restored heritage site offers visitors an intimate look into the 18th century. This beautiful 3-story building was once owned by a wealthy Englishman that stood tall amongst the thatch-covered dwellings that populated Grand Cayman. In the 1990s, the Government of the Cayman Islands purchased the property and restored it to all its original splendor and charm.

Visitors have plenty to do once they arrive onsite. History buffs will enjoy wandering around “The Great House” or joining a personalized tour, gazing upon artifacts and learning about its rich past. The Pedro Theateris also a hot spot for visitors. As you take your seat, a storm begins to brew around you and a storyteller gradually reveals the fascinating history of Pedro St. James and the Cayman Islands. The 20-minute film captivates viewers by using custom lighting techniques, wind gusts and mist to transport you back to the days of the early settlers.

The Pedro St. James Historic Site is open daily from 9AM to 5PM (closed on Christmas Day) and the multi-sensory 3-D presentation plays every hour from 10AM-4PM. Children 12 and under are admitted at no cost while all other guests 13 and up will cost $10USD each – talk about a bargain!
