The business model that turns human suffering into profit

Krysta Bisnauth, Freedom United

“There are no words to describe the never-ending nightmare these people are forced into, only to feed the mounting greed of traffickers and those in power.”—UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk

The UN has just exposed the “ruthless and violent business model” of abuse, torture and trafficking of migrants, asylum-seekers and refugees returned to Libya—“perpetrated with impunity” by traffickers, armed groups and state border and migration actors.[1]

It is now urging the international community to pause all interceptions and returns to Libya. But instead of stepping back, the European Commission has just promised to escalate its migration crackdown.[2]

Modern slavery is increasing, and too often powerful companies and governments fail to act with the urgency needed to protect people. That’s why independent advocacy like Freedom United’s is so vital. If you’re able, please consider becoming a monthly donor to help keep this work going.
