Responsible Reporting on Suicide

As the Marketing Chair of the Alex Panton Foundation, I am reaching out with deep concern following recent media coverage of the tragic passing of a former Miss Jamaica contestant earlier today. We recognise the importance of reporting on such significant news; however, we respectfully urge your newsroom to exercise caution in how suspected suicides are covered.
Including specific details of the method, particularly in headlines or opening sentences, poses serious risks. Research shows that such reporting can contribute to suicide contagion and increase vulnerability among at-risk individuals. Responsible reporting practices save lives, and we ask you to help safeguard our community by avoiding explicit details while still honouring the story.
Earlier this year, we hosted a workshop with local media professionals to share best practices for responsible reporting on mental health and suicide, and we plan to hold another in the near future. We know staff and roles change, and this is a conversation that must be ongoing.

I appreciate the Alex Panton Foundation raising awareness about responsible reporting on suicide. It’s a sensitive issue, and I agree that media has a responsibility to avoid sensationalizing tragic events, especially when it comes to potential suicide cases. Details about methods can be harmful and contribute to copycat incidents. It’s good to see efforts being made to educate journalists through workshops. However, consistency is key – this needs to be a standard practice across all media platforms, not just a one-off concern. Keeping vulnerable people safe should always be the priority. Kudos to the foundation for taking this stand and hoping these guidelines are widely adopted.
