Green NCAP and CharIN Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Strengthen EV Interoperability

LEUVEN, BELGIUM – Green NCAP and the Charging Interface Initiative e.V. (CharIN) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in the field of electric vehicle (EV) interoperability and charging performance transparency.
Under the agreement, Green NCAP has expressed interest in integrating CharIN’s conformance testing programmes within its assessment framework. This step would allow Green NCAP to further evaluate electric vehicles on interoperability performance with electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE).
Conformance testing verifies that EVs and charging equipment comply with established technical standards and protocols. It ensures that a vehicle or charger performs as intended and meets recognised industry specifications. EV interoperability refers to the ability of different vehicles and charging stations across brands, networks, and countries to work seamlessly together. In practical terms, it means that drivers can plug in and charge reliably without compatibility issues, supporting a smooth and user-friendly electric mobility experience.
As part of the partnership, Green NCAP will reference the CharIN Label within its Driving Experience assessment for electric vehicles, where relevant. Testing may be conducted in accordance with CharIN’s established processes or through recognised CharIN partners, ensuring consistency with international interoperability standards.
“The transition to electric mobility must be supported by transparency, reliability, and interoperability. By working with CharIN and recognising its conformance testing programmes, we are strengthening the information available to consumers about charging compatibility and performance. This collaboration supports our mission to empower drivers and fleets to make well-informed, sustainable mobility choices based on verified and independent assessments.”
Dr. Aleksandar Damyanov, Technical Manager Green NCAP
The collaboration aims to provide consumers, fleet operators, and policymakers with clearer, independent information about EV charging compatibility and performance. By combining Green NCAP’s sustainability and real-world performance assessments with CharIN’s technical expertise in charging standards and conformance testing, the partnership supports a more transparent and reliable electric mobility ecosystem.
“Interoperability is a key prerequisite for a reliable and user-friendly EV charging experience. Through this cooperation with Green NCAP, we are taking an important step toward increasing transparency around charging compatibility and performance. By integrating CharIN’s conformance testing programs into independent assessments, we can help ensure that vehicles and charging infrastructure work seamlessly together and support the continued growth of e-mobility.”
Michael Keller, Chief Technology Officer CharIN
Green NCAP continues its mission to empower consumers with trusted, independent information on vehicle sustainability and real-world performance. Through this cooperation with CharIN, Green NCAP strengthens its commitment to supporting the transition to cleaner, smarter, and more interoperable electric mobility.
