Five lives lost at sea—can you help us stop this?

By Krysta Bisnauth, Freedom United

The EU’s deadly policy of outsourcing border control to Libya has led to fresh tragedies this week: 5 bodies have been discovered in the Mediterranean Sea.[1] What’s worse: a Libyan coastal security vessel on the scene reportedly did not respond to radio calls from the crew that spotted the bodies.

This month, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported the discovery of two shipwrecks off the coast of Libya with sixty persons missing and feared dead.[2] It is likely these 5 bodies are from one of the shipwrecks.

The German NGO Sea-Watch discovered the bodies while flying over the Mediterranean Sea. They saw a vessel supplied by Italy to Libya near the bodies and tried to let them know about the bodies but the vessel “refused to respond” to their radio calls. When their plane returned to the scene later, the Libyan vessel had disappeared.
As you know, these deaths aren’t isolated. This is the result of Europe prioritizing border control over human rights even if it perpetuates a system of modern slavery.

For Europe and Libya, migrant deaths are not a problem; migrants reaching Europe is the problem.

The longer this agreement lasts, the more it strengthens a system that traps migrants in forced labor and exploitation or leads to bodies in the sea. We need you and your community to expose the deadly cost of Europe’s border policy. Can you share the truth with your friends and family?

It is clear that the EU will not protect human rights unless they’re forced to do so. Together, we can keep the pressure on.

Thank you for being part of this fight.
