Cayman: Women’s National Team Hosts Guatemala in Key World Cup Qualifier

The Cayman Islands Women’s National Team returns to home soil Friday night when it hosts Guatemala in Concacaf W Qualifiers action at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.

The match is Cayman’s second in Group C after falling 4-0 to Bermuda in the tournament opener. Players say they’ve used the time since to sharpen their game and build team unity.

“We didn’t come off of the gas. We kept on training and I feel like we’re in a really good position to put out a good result,” said Tamoy Phillips. “No one’s really expecting much from us and I just want us to go out there and show people what we can do.”

Midfielder Kaelia Ebanks said the focus has been on staying competitive throughout the full 90 minutes. “I want us to continue to be competitive all throughout the game. Be positive, stick with each other, and just take what the coaches taught us for the last couple of weeks into the game.”

One key advantage for Cayman: team chemistry. Player Courtney Hicks noted that having most of the squad on-island has made a difference. “We’ve been playing with the same players consistently more often for this match. So hopefully the connection between all of us is better.”

Chelsea Brown echoed the team’s confidence. “I think we have been preparing pretty well and with the help of a few of the young players, we’ve been able to have numbers at training. I think we’re ready.”

The Concacaf W Qualifiers feature 29 member associations competing for advancement to the Concacaf W Championship, which serves as the region’s pathway to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

CIFA Women’s Technical Director Martha Godet encouraged the community to support the team. “This is an important stage in the development of our Women’s National Team and an opportunity for our players to compete at a high level on home soil.”
