West Bay District Football League Kicks-off
It’s always been a belief that when it comes to individual skill and talent on the football field, look no
further than West Bay. To this end, the West Bay football fraternity and the West Bay Community
Wellness Association have come together to present The Ivan Farrington Football Cup.
With the CIFA Leagues now concluded it’s no longer about teams, it’s about the West Bay
communities. Competing for the coveted title and supremacy in West Bay are Birch Tree Hill, Mount
Pleasant, West Bay Central, Bosun Bay and Northwest Point.
Historically, each of the five communities has produced some unbelievable players – legends in their
day – who were a joy to watch during CIFA games in the 1970s and 1980s at the once home to West
Bay football – the Town Hall Field. Colourful names like Sea Cat, Johnny Man, Digga, Guy, Fiya, Lesley
Smith, Zeli, Russian, Pullala, Dada, Skill, Huta, Apo, Peebo, Fisher, Sammy Powery and Fat Paddy…
not counting the modern legends who have played their part in bringing football glory to the
‘Republic’ over the years.
In this year’s inaugural Ivan Farrington Football Cup, each team has fused experience with youth in
what promises to be an exciting collection of games. Women’s football has always been an essential
part of sports in West Bay and for this league, they will participate alongside their male
counterparts.
Never to be excluded, the legends have also been invited to be a part of this district tournament.
Those who are still able to lace up their boots and offer a few minutes of brilliance have been
drafted into the squads and if not able to go, their mere presence on the sidelines will more than
likely elevate the standard of play on the field and definitely add to the atmosphere.
A key member of the organising committee James “Jamo” Myles said, “On behalf of the West Bay
Community Wellness Steering Committee, I wish to extend an invitation to all and sundry to the
league matches on Wednesday and Sunday evenings. Together, we can engage and promote wellness
through movement. Join us this Sunday at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. for the opening games as well as
fun, fellowship and football as we move towards more healthy communities.”
The league kicks-off this Sunday, August 10 and games will be played at the Ed Bush Field on
Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. and Sundays at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Football fans from West Bay and across the Island are encouraged to come and support this
community effort and watch the best from West Bay on display.
