Best of Cayman 2025

We’re proud to share that the National Museum has been voted Best Heritage Site (Gold) in the Best of Cayman 2025 awards! A huge thank you to our community for the support—this recognition celebrates our ongoing mission to preserve and share Cayman’s rich history and culture.

Roots & Remedies: Healing Through Heritage

On 13 September, our Roots & Remedies: Tradition & Wellness Market filled the Museum’s waterfront grounds with community, culture, and holistic wellness. From bush medicine and artisanal crafts to drum circles, chi-gong, and sound therapy, the event celebrated Cayman’s living heritage by blending traditional knowledge with modern practices. Read More

The Old Courts Building Lit in Blue for World Maritime Day

To honour World Maritime Day, the National Museum was bathed in blue light — a symbolic nod to Cayman’s rich marine heritage. This year’s theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” calls attention to how our oceans sustain life, drive trade, and face mounting pressures from pollution and climate change.

New Exhibitions (Opening Soon)

The Sea is History – New Exhibition Opening 16 October 2025

Our upcoming exhibition, The Sea is History, opens on 16 October 2025, exploring the Cayman Islands’ profound relationship with the sea. Inspired by Derek Walcott’s famous poem, the exhibition showcases how the ocean serves as a repository of stories and memories central to Caymanian cultural identity.

Visitors will encounter a mix of historical and contemporary artefacts—some mysterious, others well-documented—retrieved from the sea or found along the islands’ beaches, alongside objects and images that highlight the sea as a defining presence in Caymanian life.

Archipelago: 4th Cayman Islands Biennial – Opening 3 October 2025

The National Museum is proud to be a host venue for the 4th Cayman Islands Biennial, opening 3 October 2025. Titled Archipelago, this multi-site exhibition explores the interplay between individuality and community, reflecting on themes of heritage, memory, belonging, social dynamics, and ecological legacies.

Featuring over 80 works by more than 100 artists from all three islands and the Diaspora, the Biennial showcases the diversity and creativity of Caymanian art. The exhibition runs through 18 February 2026 at various locations, including the National Gallery, the National Museum, Little Cayman Museum, and Brac Heritage House.

The Cabinet of Curiosities: A Peek into Caymanian Heritage

This October, we’re launching a special Friday series: each week, we’ll reveal an intriguing item from the Museum’s collection, inspired by the idea of the Cabinet of Curiosities (or Wunderkammer). Originally a 16th/17th‑century European concept, these cabinets displayed exotic objects from around the world—often taken during colonial expansion—as a way to impress and exert power.

In the Cayman Islands, collecting took on a different meaning. Private collector Ira Thompson’s collection, the nucleus of the National Museum, preserved everyday objects alongside rare finds, creating an open-air “Kiemanos Museum” that celebrated Caymanian life, memory, and identity.

Join us each Friday this October to discover these objects and the stories they tell—where wonder meets heritage. Read Blog Post
