Cayman Museum News: August 2025
From Cayman Islands National Museum

Could this be the old Courts Building from the 1800s?
This photograph, published in an 1896 Presbyterian Church journal, bears the caption: “Group under almond tree in front of Court House, George Town, Grand Cayman.” Was this the original courts building back when it was just a single story? Watch the reel

Heritage in the Spotlight: The National Museum and CNCF appeared on Compass TV’s “Daybreak,” unveiling our new VR initiative—a creative leap that transforms our understanding of Cayman’s rich history. Through immersive storytelling and cutting-edge technology, the VR project ensures that icons like Miss Lassie will continue to inspire the next generation. Catch the full segment to see how the past is being preserved in the most futuristic way—on your screen and soon, perhaps, in VR. Rewatch the segment

Our Director Represented Us at CARIFESTA XV in Barbados
Our Director, Dr. Veerle Poupeye, represented us at CARIFESTA XV in Barbados, where she shared insights on Caribbean art and heritage in two dynamic panels: “The Cultural Landscape 25 Years On: Where to Next?” and “Arrival as Resistance: Remaking Caribbean Meaning on the World Stage.” From national galleries to VR heritage projects, Dr. Poupeye explored how Caribbean culture continues to connect the past, present, and future. Step Inside Miss Lassie’s Chapel Room — Virtually!
The Cayman National Cultural Foundation and the Cayman Islands National Museum have teamed up to preserve Miss Lassie’s iconic Chapel Room using cutting-edge VR technology. We photographed every wall of the chapel in detailed sections, stitched them together, and placed them into a 3D model built in Blender — creating an immersive virtual experience that captures the room exactly as it is.
