Cayman: Malicious PDF Circulating via Compromised Email Address

The RCIPS Cyber Crime Investigation Team is aware of a PDF document currently being sent to local entities from a compromised email address.

The PDF contains a malicious link labelled “VIEW PDF” which installs malware when clicked. Police are aware that some local systems have already been compromised, due to persons clicking the link.

What you should do:

  • Do not click any links in unexpected PDFs or attachments.
  • Verify the sender by contacting them directly through a trusted method (call a known number or use a confirmed email address).
  • If you already clicked the link or opened the file, disconnect the device from the internet/network immediately and contact your IT support/service provider for assistance.
  • Businesses should alert their staff and review email security practices.

The RCIPS encourages the public and business community to remain vigilant and exercise caution when handling unsolicited electronic communications.
