URCO confirms approval of Certificate of Need for launch of competitive process for new generation capacity

The Utility Regulation and Competition Office URCO has approved Caribbean Utilities Company revised Certificate of Need confirming the need for additional generating capacity.

Please find attached a press release from the Utility Regulation and Competition Office (URCO) confirming approval of Caribbean Utilities Company’s revised Certificate of Need (CON), identifying the need for approximately 94 MW of additional electricity generation capacity on Grand Cayman.

This approval enables URCO to move forward with the next stage of a transparent and competitive solicitation process to explore options for meeting the island’s future electricity demand. The decision confirms that the submission meets the regulatory requirements under the licence framework but does not endorse any specific project, technology, or procurement approach.

The process is intended to support a reliable electricity supply while allowing a range of potential solutions to be considered, including renewables, energy storage, efficiency measures and other technologies capable of meeting the system’s operational and reliability requirements.
