Happy Monday. I missed y’all last week. I won’t go into too much detail, but sometimes 💩 happens. Sometimes, literally.

We came home Monday to a septic tank, uh, issue. Long, gross story short, thank you to the Hyatt Place/Downtown Sumter hotel for being pet-friendly and generally lovely for a couple days.

Needless to say, I was unexpectedly preoccupied last Monday.

But a lot has happened that I think you might want to read about!

But before we get to that, I want to give you a heads up about a change to this email we’re making next month. Starting in 2022, this Monday email from me will only be sent to our subscribers. I really wish we could share everything our small but dedicated team produces with everyone, but the reality is [if you know me at all, you’ve heard some of this before] that we can’t do it for free. And we think the local journalism we offer the community is valuable and worth supporting.

Our newsroom, made up of journalists, photographers, videographers, graphic designers, editors and page designers, works really hard to find local information you need and want to know, talk to people, confirm the facts, write it up, make it entertaining, make it look good and get it to the platforms you use daily to make it as easy for you as possible to be informed about and entertained by what’s happening right here in our community. A lot of the stories we produce would go untold if there were no Sumter Item. We’ve been here for 127 years, and we don’t plan to go anywhere, but we also know we have operation costs and we have a team of people who also live in this community who need paychecks.

But don’t you make enough money from advertising? Short answer: no.

We love love love our advertisers, but we also know that a lot of local businesses are having to make hard decisions about where they spend their money. When people spend money with big search engines and social media platforms, it’s not staying local. I know you probably also have to make hard decisions about where to spend your hard-earned money, and I think it’s important to show our thanks for those who shop local by reading local. Therefore, in the new year this will become a subscriber perk.

Everyone signed up to our free daily newsletter will continue to get that. This is just a little something extra for those who value local news or maybe just want to continue seeing pictures of my dog. Keep reading…I’ll show you something that’s not my dog but also not the contents of my septic tank. You’re welcome.

So anyway [steps off soap box], if you are already set up to keep getting this email come 2022, THANK YOU! Truly. And if you’re not, please at least consider it. A digital subscription gives you full, unlimited access to TheItem.com and every story on it, our E-Paper, which is a digital replica of our print newspaper produced 5 days a week, videos, podcasts and more. You can unlock that access here for as low as $2.54 a week.
