Cayman Islands 2017 Primary & Secondary Spelling Bees start today (Wed 29)

The Ministry of Education and Department of Education Services (DES) wish all this year’s spelling bee participants the best of luck today (29 November) as they participate in the 2017 RBC Royal Bank Primary Spelling Bee at Red Bay Church of God. This marks the 20th Anniversary of RBC Royal Bank’s commitment toward education by sponsoring this exciting event.

Spelling competitions continue with the 34th Annual Lion’s Club Secondary Spelling Bee taking place on the Thursday (30 November).

Both spelling bees commence at 10 am and will feature participants from Grand Cayman & the Sister Islands who attend public schools, private institutions or are being home-schooled. Each spelling bee is expected to last 2-3 hours depending on the strength of the students.

Today’s spelling bee will consist of 38 students from 13 schools. While the Lion’s Club Secondary Spelling Bee, will consist of 18 students representing 6 schools. Students have been encouraged to bring along cheering sections from their schools and it should be an exciting event.

The Ministry and DES are grateful of the Lion’s Club and RBC Royal Bank of Canada for their continued support of this yearly tradition. Appreciation is also extended to all the teachers, parents, and guardians who support the students as they prepare to compete in the spelling bees. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and support the Spelling Bee Finalists.
