Prisoners and Staff Assist the Elderly in the Northward Area

As part of the Corrections Week activities, the Prison Service assisted a neighbour in need. The ninety-nine year old resident and her 78 year old daughter live in a lovely home in Northward. However, unable to do any gardening themselves because of age and health concerns, the yard had become overgrown and hazardous for the ladies to even go outdoors. A concerned relative contacted the Prison and asked for help.

On Saturday morning, April 23rd 2016, on the eve of Corrections Week, equipped with equipment and supplies, a large work party tackled the yard, cutting back trees, trimming plants and clearing up litter passersby had thrown into the yard.

The crew filled a 20 foot skip.

Prison spokesperson Raquel Solomon said, “We were asked to assist and we are happy to where we can, especially those in our community who are vulnerable and in need. The prisoners are also happy to do things outside of their normal routine and help others.”

Their hard work really paid off and the transformation of the yard was remarkable. The ladies of the house were very appreciative and the matriarch even sang for the party as they worked.
