The Cayman Islands’ BEAST is back

DEH xmas tree mulching 2016 (42)DEH Recycles Christmas Trees

The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) on Saturday 23 January turned hundreds of used Christmas trees into reusable mulch.

Angello Roye, the DEH’s Recycling Foreman of Solid Waste says more than 1,800 trees were donated to the project.

“I am very happy to see the level of engagement by the public, the amount of people who take advantage of the recycling programme and the free mulch continues to increase year over year,” said Mr. Roye.

He said the department’s new industrial wood grinding machine churned out about 60 Cubic Yards (about 2 ½ dump truck loads) of mulch, which was in turn given to the public at no cost.

The post-Christmas programme encourages recycling, and prevents the trees from being thrown into the George Town landfill.
