Cayman Islands long time civil servant leaves to become minister of religion

Janis McLaughlin, who has been a civil servant for 25 years – 18 plus with the Judiciary – is to say goodbye at the end of this month to fulfill a promise.

The promise was made to God to become a fulltime minister of religion. She will be working with Bishop Oral McLaughlin of the Eastern Apostolic Church in East End.

She said she made this promise to God many years ago when one of her children was born with a number of medical concerns “and the challenges just kept coming,” because she could not handle the situation she turned to prayer.

Janis is convinced this is what saved him and he graduated from primary school and then high school and is now preparing to travel overseas to take up a course in auto mechanics.

Before her ordination in 2011, Janis further equipped herself by pursuing a counselling degree from the online Rockville University and graduated with distinction in 2007.

She anticipates that her first stop on her new mission will be a trip to a Women’s Retreat in the United States. She plans to also travel to Jamaica and Honduras to visit branches of her church there, but her main focus will be to support the work of Bishop McLaughlin in her primary mission field, the Cayman Islands.

CARIBBEAN: Venezuela agrees to send back its Ambassador to Guyana and to accredit new Guyanese Ambassador

By iNews Guyana From St Lucia News online

IMAGE: The historic meeting between Guyana’s President David Granger and Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro has ended with the Venezuelan Head of State giving into Guyana’s demands.

Speaking to media operatives shortly after the United Nations facilitated meeting in New York, President Granger said Venezuela has agreed to accredit the new Guyanese Ambassador, career diplomat Cheryl Miles.

President Maduro has also agreed to send back his Ambassador to Guyana which he had recalled a few months ago when the decades old border controversy between the neighbouring countries was reignited.

Venezuela has also agreed to accept a United Nations investigative team that will report to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon so that a final resolution can be arrived at.

“The Secretary General has a menu of measures which he has sighted; he knows very well that it has reached a stage where it will require a legal investigation,” Granger said.

This was President Granger’s first meeting with Maduro.

He said he was grateful for the meeting which afforded both sides the opportunity to explain its individual position.

Prior to the meeting Granger and Maduro were photographed shaking hands.

Granger reported that “the Venezuelan position is based on the Geneva agreement… they felt they were seeking resolution through the agreement but avoided that the matter was settled in 1899… they couldn’t provide evidence that the agreement was null and void.”

He said Guyana has asked for legal solution to the matter.

Also in attendance at the meeting were the Foreign Ministers of both Guyana and Venezuela.

Caribbean banking and financial services sector comes into focus in Barbados and Curacao

Much needed focus will be brought to the Caribbean banking and financial services sector over the coming months with two important gatherings of the region’s most influential industry practitioners.

The Caribbean Export Development Agency (CEDA) in conjunction with Caribbean-Central American Action (CCAA) will host a workshop on Caribbean Banking and the Caribbean International Financial Services Sector in Curacao, from September 30-October 1, 2015. The workshop will discuss in detail, the challenges facing the Caribbean Basin and acts as a precursor to the Global Forum of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), scheduled to take place in Bridgetown, Barbados, late in October 2015.

“Caribbean financial institutions find themselves increasingly vulnerable to regulatory changes and new trends that threaten their very existence. Once seen as a growth industry for regional economies seeking to diversify from the dependency of the non-competitive agriculture base or the tourism-dependent economies; today the industry (traditional and offshore) is facing an ever increasing array of obstacles in this critical growth industry,” said Pamela Coke-Hamilton, executive director of the Caribbean Export Development Agency who will be in attendance and deliver remarks at the workshop on October 1.

The minister of industry, international business, commerce and small business development for Barbados, Donville Inniss, will also be attendance together with a number of other heavyweights in the region’s institutions, including central bank governors and private sector financial institutions to discuss three key topics: correspondent banking, remittances and the offshore industry.

In view of the significant impact to regional economies of de-risking and regulatory changes, it is hoped the group will identify possible solutions for regional institutions and economies, and generate specific recommendations for action. The ultimate aim of the workshop will be the submission of a white paper for consideration to be addressed at the OECD’s Global Forum, taking place in Barbados October, 2015.

Caribbean Export is currently leading the implementation of a multifaceted regional initiative aimed at supporting the sustainable development of the international financial services sector in CARIFORUM. To date Caribbean Export has supported the development of the sector within the scope of the 10th EDF Regional Private Sector Development Programme and has spent approximately $1.6m BBD in doing so.

Such support has included the facilitation of two conferences on international financial services, the establishment and operation of the Task Force for the Promotion and Protection of the Caribbean Financial Sector (TFP-CFS) and the commissioning of studies to support the implementation of priority actions agreed upon by CARIFORUM ministers.

Venezuela supports Caribbean as Zone of Peace and Unity

iNews B venez unnamed41Caracas (Prensa Latina) Venezuela’s President, Nicolas Maduro, urged Latin American nations to continue today supporting the Caribbean as a zone of peace and unity.

Upon his return to Caracas after visiting St. Kitts and Nevis, and Dominica, the president thanked the attention given by authorities and the people of these Caribbean islands.

He also urged the regional integration blocs, such as the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) and the mechanism of Petrocaribe energy cooperation, to continue the work for the development of that region.

During his stay in St. Kitts and Nevis, Maduro reaffirmed the ties of cooperation in all fields and, mainly, in social area.

Maduro also signed with Prime Minister Timothy Harris new agreements on health and housing, in the field of cooperation fostered by Petrocaribe and ALBA-TCP.

One of the agreements will allow the arrival to Saint Kitts and Nevis of the Miracle Mission program, aimed at improving, free of charge, the quality of vision for people with limited economic resources.

Another agreement includes programs related to energy and housing construction.

Meanwhile, in Dominica, Maduro expressed his solidarity with that Caribbean island, which suffered on August the passing of Hurricane Erika.

During the visit, Maduro and Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit inspected some of the 300 homes provided by Venezuela to the victims of the hurricane.

Abraham to ride in Caribbean Elite Champs

iNews B AR-150929758.jpg&MaxW=730&imageversion=ArticleFrom Trinidad Express

IMAGE: Confirmed for Elite Championships: Emile Abraham

Marquee Trinidad and Tobago rider Emile Abraham has been confirmed as one of over 120 competitors who will do battle in the 15th Caribbean Elite Road Cycling Championship to be staged here next month.

Organisers said they were also expecting riders from 23 Caribbean countries, including Cuba, Puerto Rico and Guadeloupe, to be present for the October 17-18 event.

Keith Yearwood, president the Barbados Cycling Union who are the hosts organisers, said detailed planning had gone into the event to make it one of the best ever.

“This year we’re expecting the Championships to be one of the best and the biggest to be held in the 15 years,” Yearwood said.

“The Barbados Cycling Union has been working assiduously since November last year when we got the championships in October, and we’ve been working assiduously to ensure we do all in our power to give this championship the hype it deserves.”

A time trial will be the highlight of the opening day on October 17 and it will see riders using the ABC Highway from Mile and A Quarter, in the northern parish of St Peter to the Norman Niles roundabout, in the south-western parish of St Michael.

Riders will then return to the start, in a circuit that has been measured at around 40 kilometres.

The second day of the championship will feature the circuit race starting from Bushy Park in the rugged eastern parish of St John and proceeding on a route through St Phillip, on the south-western side of the island.

Riders are expected to complete 11 laps of the nearly 15 kilometre circuit.

Logistics manager for the championship, Charlie Pile, said preparations were at an advanced stage.

“Preparations are approximately 85 per cent complete at this time. The remaining 15 per cent is stuff which can be achieved within the time left.”

The Caribbean Media Corporation are part sponsors of the championship and will be featuring event on its CaribVision channel.
